10th parliament begins journey

The much-talked-about 10th parliament began its journey at 6:06 pm on Wednesday with Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali in the chair, reports UNB.
The elected MPs of the ruling and opposition benches gathered in the House soon after Magrib prayers as they did not want to miss the first session of the new parliament.
Earlier, on January 13, President Abdul Hamid summoned the maiden session of the new parliament exercising the power bestowed upon him as per article 72 (1) of the Constitution, according to the legislative support wing of the Parliament Secretariat.
Meanwhile, incumbent Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was unanimously elected the Speaker of the 10th Parliament.
LGRD Minister and Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam proposed her name as the new Speaker which was seconded by Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu.
Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali who was conducting the session announced that no other candidate was found for the Speaker post. He later put it on voice vote and all the MPs raised their voice in favour of Dr Shirin.
"Now I can declare that Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is the Speaker for the 10th Parliament," he said.
At that time, Members of Parliament thumped their desks expressing their greetings to the newly elected Speaker.
Later, the Speaker put the name of Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia for the post of Deputy Speaker.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed proposed his name which was seconded by Chief Whip ASM Feroz.
Like that of the Speaker, no name was found for the Deputy Speaker post either.
As his name was put on voice vote, the MPs chanted in chorus "Yes" in favour of Fazle Rabbi Mia.
Later, the Speaker announced the name of the new Deputy Speaker.
