12,000 Ansar members to guard highways

The government will deploy some 12,000 Ansar members at 993 vulnerable points on highways and regional roads across the country from today (Friday) to prevent acts of sabotage, report agencies.

Initially, the Ansar men will be deployed at 216 points today and they will start guarding other points gradually, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday.

He was talking to reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting on ensuring safe and smooth vehicular movement on highways, waterways and railways.

Mr Obaidul said the meeting discussed about beefing up security for smooth movement of passengers and transportation of goods on highways, waterways and railways.

He also said public representatives, including local MPs and union parishad chairmen, will assist the administration in this connection.  movement.

He also said the government is actively considering giving the transport owners compensation and logistic support as per their demand. "Steps will be taken as soon as possible after consultation with the Prime Minister."
