127 BNP-Jamaat men held in Ctg, C’nawabganj, Gaibandha

CHITTAGONG, Jan 16 (BSS): Chittagong district police in a night-long drive arrested 27 activists of BNP-Jamaat from eight upazilas, including Satkhania, Sitakunda and Lohagara, Thursday night and today.

Naimul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district, said they were detained in raids in various parts of the district from Thursday night to early Friday.

Police said they detained the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists during the drives to prevent possible acts of sabotage in Chittagong.

They were nabbed from Mirsarai, Sitakundu, Fatikchhari, Hathazari, Patiya, Satkania and Lohagara upazilas, he said.

Among the detainees, four were Jamaat activists, nine Islami Chhatra Shibir activists and 14 BNP activists, the police said.

The arrestees were involved in vandalism in different areas under the police stations, police added.

Aother report adds from Chapainawabganj, joint forces comprising executive magistrate, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested 25 leaders and workers of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir in a day-long drive in different places of Shibganj Upazila in the district today.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibganj Thana Moinul Islam said the drives started in the Rasulpur, Shahbajpur, Shyampur, Kansat and Monakasha areas of Shibganj Upazila.

He said the drives were carried out as the Jamaat-Shibir and BNP activists were allegedly resorting to destructive activities, including attacks on and setting fire to vehicles carrying imported goods from Sonamasjid Land Port.

The activists also carried out attacks on members of law-enforcement agencies with cocktails and petrol bombs in the name of blockade.

UNB adds from Gaibandha : Police in a drive arrested 75 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami from different parts of the district early Friday.

Mofazzal Hossain, superintendent of police, Gaibandha, said police during the overnight drive arrested the 75 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat on charge of carrying out sabotage.

The arrestees were also involved in blocking roads and vandalising and torching vehicles, he added.

Police sources said they arrested nine activists of BNP-Jamaat from Saghata Upazila, three from Fulchhari, four from Palashbari, 13 from Gobindaganj, nine from Sadullapur, 13 from Sundarganj and 18 from Sadar Upazila of the district.
