15-member ad hoc body to run Bar Council

The government has formed a 15-member ad hoc committee to run the Bangladesh Bar Council, a licensing and regularity body for all advocates of Bangladesh, as its elections could not be held on time due to ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The committee has been constituted in accordance with Article 8 of the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order, 1972, said a statement issued by the law ministry.

The statement quoted law secretary Golam Sarwar as saying, "The government constituted this ad hoc committee of the Bar Council comprising 15 members with the powers conferred by Section 8 of the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order, 1972." "This ad hoc committee has been formed as it was not possible to hold the election of the Bangladesh Bar Council on time due to coronavirus pandemic," also read the statement quoting the law secretary.

The statement said the term of this ad hoc committee will be till June 30, 2022. This committee will complete the election of the Bar Council on or before May 31, 2022 and the Bar Council that would be constituted by election will assume its responsibilities on July 1, 2022.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin is the chairman of the ad hoc committee of the Bar Council.

Lawyers Yusuf Hosain Humayun, Abdul Baset Majumder, Syed Rezaur Rahman, Mukhlesur Rahman Badol, HAM Zahirul Islam Khan Panna (ZI Khan Panna), Shah Md Khasruzzaman, Md Kamrul Islam are included in the committee.

Due to the increase in coronavirus infection, an emergency meeting was held on April 3 this year and the election of Bangladesh Bar Council was postponed. Earlier the schedule for the Bar Council elections was announced on March 18 this year. According to the schedule, the election was to be held on May 25.
