Defending the government move to restore parliament's authority to remove Supreme Court judges, Law Minister Anisul Huq said on Sunday it will certainly enhance the dignity and authority of judges rather than curbing independence of the judiciary, reports UNB.
"We're not going to bring any change in the constitution…we've just proposed to restore what it was in 1972 constitution. Those who are now opposing it had included the Article 96 in the 1972 constitution," the minister said.
The law minister made the remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 124th refresher course for the Joint District and Sessions Judges and Equivalent Judicial Officers at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the city. "For the first time, there'll be a clear definition and explanation in the constitution over 'misconduct' and 'incapability' of judges.
Following the amendment, both parties will get equal opportunities to defend themselves," Anisul Huq said.
Reminding the judges about their accountability and responsibility, the minister said, "You'll have to regain people's faith in the judiciary."
He urged them to work with utmost sincerity and honesty, and dispose of all the pending cases as early as possible ensuring justice.
