30 hurt in BNP-Jamaat clash over front-row seating in Sherpur

A clash between the activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami has left at least 30 people injured in Sherpur, reports bdnews24.com.
The incident occurred around 3:00 pm on Wednesday at the Jhenaigati Upazila Mini Stadium.
Candidates running for the parliamentary polls from the Sherpur-3 constituency were invited to attend the programme.
The clash broke out following an altercation between activists of Jamaat and BNP over seating in the front row.
Jamaat activists had reportedly arrived at the venue earlier than the BNP activists and occupied all front-row seats.
The clash started as the activists threw chairs at each other.
Soon, the venue turned into a battlefield as the brawl led to arson attacks on motorcycles.
The injured were admitted to the Jhenaigati Upazila Health Complex.
Sherpur Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Tarfadar Mahmudur Rahman said they were closely monitoring the situation, with police and Army personnel deployed.
The parties refused to comment on the matter.
"A seemingly peaceful situation going out of hand so suddenly and without any warning is really concerning," said Mahmudur Rahman.
Jamaat and BNP leaders have blamed each other for the clash.
BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque Rubel held a press conference in Jhenaigati in the evening condemning the incident and demanding punishment of those responsible.
