32nd anniversary of Bangabandhu assassination day tomorrow

August 14, 2007 00:00:00

The nation pays homage to country's founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tomorrow (Wed-nesday) on the occasion of 32nd anniversary of his assassination on August 15, amid calls for recognising it as national mourning day, reports UNB.
President Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Advisor (CA) to the caretaker government Fakhru-ddin Ahmed would visit Tungipara on the day and offer Fateha at the leader's Mazar.
Awami League (AL) earlier had demanded of the caretaker government to officially declare August 15 as national mourning day and observe the day with state honours. The interim government has not yet made any response.
However, the party will observe the day on a limited scale in line with government advice, as political activities have been banned under the State of Emergency.
The AL central leadership and front organisations will place floral wreaths on the portrait of the late leader at Dhanmondi Road No. 32 and at Banani graveyard, hold Milad Mahfil and arrange destitute-feeding in flood-affected areas or orphanages.
A delegation of the AL would visit Tungipara and lay wreaths at the grave of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
At the crack of dawn on August 15, 1975, Bangabandhu and his family members, excepting two daughters-Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who were fortunately abroad at the time-were killed by a group of the armed forces.
