Police have arrested 42 leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) and its affiliates in Chattogram over cases in connection with the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, report agencies.
The arrests were made in raids conducted from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police said in a media statement.
Among the detainees are leaders of Chattogram Metropolitan Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), as well as Awami League (AL), Jubo League, and Hawkers' League activists at the upazila and ward levels, according to police.
Police said they are accused in various cases linked to incidents stemming from the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and cases filed under the anti-terror law.
Earlier, police reported the arrest of 39 people in similar raids between Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, police have arrested 35 leaders and activists of AL from all eight districts of Rangpur division in the last 24 hours ending at 6:00 am on Sunday raising the number of total arrested people to 1,423 in the last five months.
They were arrested in several cases filed against them for conducting attacks, murders, attempted murders and sabotage on students and the public in the anti-discrimination student movement, and planners and financiers of these crimes.
The crimes and operations division of the Rangpur Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG)'s Office confirmed the information to local journalists.
According to the information, they were arrested in separate drives under various upazilas and districts of the division.
The arrestees are Gaibandha City Jubo League sports secretary Rakib Mahmud Apel, Municipal BCL joint organising secretary Hasan Kazi, Gobindaganj Municipal Jubo League general secretary Arifur Sarkar, member Shariful Islam, Mahimaganj union parishad chairman and expelled Union AL general secretary Anarul Islam.
