The government has banned the 431st issue of 'Alpin', a weekly supplement of Bangla leading daily Prothom Alo, for publishing a cartoon which was believed to have hurt the religious sentiment of the people, reports UNB.
The government also ordered the arrest of Alpin cartoonist Arifur Rahman in this connection, saying that the "cartoon, 'Nam', published on page 6 of the issue has hurt the religious sentiment of the people," said a handout Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Prothom Alo authorities have withdrawn the Alpin issue, expressed regret and sought apology for publishing the cartoon.
The handout said the government has taken an initiative to discuss the matter with religious leaders and urged all concerned to play a sensible role and exercise restraint in this connection.
Another handout said the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed all concerned to seize all the copies of the 'Alpin' issue.
