66.89pc MPs with biz background

An analysis by the Shusashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) on the 12th national election revealed that 66.89 per cent of the recently elected lawmakers are individuals with a business background.
On the other hand, an estimated 89.97 per cent of the new legislators possess assets valued at more than Tk 10 million.
Comparing the 12th general election with the 11th one, there is an increase in both the number of businesspeople and lawmakers with assets exceeding Tk 10 million.
The Shujan disclosed this during a virtual press conference on Tuesday after scrutinising the affidavits of the winning lawmakers in the January 07 election.
Dilip Kumar Sarkar, the central coordinator of SHUJAN, presented the findings, revealing that out of the 299 elected lawmakers, 66.89 per cent or 200 individuals have a business background.
This represents an increase from the 11th national parliament, where 61.66 per cent or 185 individuals were businesspeople.
Among the elected lawmakers, 89.97 per cent or 269 individuals have assets surpassing Tk 10 million, marking an increase from the 82.33 per cent or 247 individuals in the previous parliament.
Additionally, the number of highly educated parliamentarians has slightly risen compared to the 11th Parliament, with 82.60 per cent of newly elected members having completed graduation or post-graduation, compared to 81 per cent in the 11th parliament.
Shujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar expressed concern that the 12th general election lacked several features of a fair election.
