Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Thursday that about 80 per cent of his party's leaders and activists are now subjected to torture and repression by the Awami League (AL) government.

"The present Awami League (AL) government will not sustain in power if they don't stop oppression and suppression (on the opponents)," he said while distributing Eid and Ramadan gifts to the family members of those who have become victims of enforced disappearances, killings and mutilation due to anti-government movement for restoring democracy in the country at the party chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital.

He, however, expressed hope that they would win in their ongoing democratic movement.

"Movement for democracy is always a rational movement and we will win-- (in that movement)," he said.

He said that the health condition of the party's ailing Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia took serious turn on Wednesday. But her condition improved following prompt steps taken by her physicians.

Mr Fakhrul said that the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman has been passing days in exile due to repression and cases filed against him by the government.

Narrating ordeals of the family members of those who became victims of enforced disappearances, killings and oppressions by the government, he further said that these have not happened only in the case of BNP but also for all the people of Bangladesh.

He said that the people of the country live in a constant fear of when who may become victim of enforced disappearance.
