Approximately 81.9 per cent of DU students want DUCSU as an alternative after banning party-affiliated student politics at Dhaka University, according to an opinion survey by Dhaka University Research Society (DURS).

As much as 80 per cent of the students said they only require the political practices by Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), but they do not support partisan student politics.

However, 88 per cent of students believe partisan student politics is not required on the campus.

DURS presented this survey results on Tuesday at Dhaka University Journalists' Association. The survey is titled "Partisan Student Politics and Political Activities in Dhaka University Campus".

As much as 71 per cent students think partisan student politics has a negative impact on the learning environment of the university.

In contrast, only 3 per cent of students believed that partisan student politics had a positive effect on the learning environment of the university, of which one per cent said it has a "very positive effect" while two per cent said it has "positive effect".

Only one per cent students think that partisan student politics is an essential part of university education.

On answering a question regarding supporting party-affiliated meetings and processions in the university, 95 per cent put a negative response.

As much as 74 per cent of students reported negative experiences as a result of political activities. On the other hand, only 26 per cent of students opined they had no negative experience.

However, 90 per cent of the students do not intend to join any political organisation in future.

Majority of the students who participated in the survey expects that partisan student politics be banned in the university due to the violence and harassment they know students have faced, including torture and oppression inside the residential halls and Chhatra League leaders forcing students in political processions during the Awami League regime.

Students who are against the ban of student politics in the university mentioned that political practice is important to build national leadership and realising the political rights of students.
