Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Thursday that a neighbouring country was trying to control Bangladesh.

"A neighbouring country has been trying to control Bangladesh since its (Bangladesh) birth. The (Awami League) government has already become a subservient government," he said while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club in the city in commemoration of the historical Farakka Long March spearheaded by late Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.

"Many political parties in Bangladesh have been struggling jointly to get back democratic rights. Many have sacrificed their lives. Cases were filed against six million BNP leaders and activists. Oppression on the opponents is still going on. Opposition leaders and activists are being sent to jail after giving punishment," he said.

"The government has been oppressing people to protect its key interests. The Awami League is holding power by holding election as per their will sensing defeat and their extinction," he continued.
