Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) authorities on Saturday described the appointment of Dr A B M Abdullah as Emeritus Professor as unlawful, saying the process did not comply with the relevant rules and regulations, reports BSS.

"Prof Abdullah's appointment was made solely in consideration of his role as the personal physician to the former prime minister, bypassing all mandatory selection procedures. This was entirely unlawful," a BMU press release said.

The release said Section 5 of the Emeritus Professor Appointment Ordinance requires that any such appointment be initiated through a proposal by the department chairman, submitted to the Vice-Chancellor through the Dean, evaluated by a specially constituted committee, and finally approved by that committee.

"But he was appointed as a lifetime Emeritus Professor solely on the proposal of a single member... Therefore, the university declared the appointment process illegal," it added.

Issuing a clarification, the university said the decision to cancel the appointment was not directed at any individual but was taken to rectify serious administrative and procedural violations while ensuring legal compliance, transparency and financial accountability.

The university reiterated its commitment to upholding lawful processes and institutional good governance.
