ACC finds anomalies in wealth statements of ex-ministers, MPs

The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Commi-ssioner M Shahabuddin said Wednesday that the Commission has found anomalies in the wealth statements of the former ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) during their investigation.

"We found discrepancies in the statements which some former ministers and MPs furnished to the Election Commission for contesting the national elections of January 5 and the testimony they gave during the ACC's interrogations," he told the reporters at the ACC head office in the city.

Mr Shahabuddin said they will continue the process of investigation if they feel there is need of it.

"We started the inquiry against some ministers, on the basis of allegations, and will continue it," he said. He, however, did not disclose the name of any minister, and MP.   

Meanwhile, the ACC interrogated Wednesday the ruling party Member of Parliament (MP) Aslamul Haque, and the secretary of the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare Dr Khandoker Sawkot Hossain for different allegations.

MP Aslamul Haque faced the grilling on charges of his unusual wealth accumulation in last five years. The anti-graft body deputy director (DD) Mesbah Uddin Ahmed quizzed him from 10.00 am to 12.00pm at the ACC head office in the city, officials said.

After the grilling, the MP told the reporters that he did not earn any illegal wealth in last five years and there was a mistake occurred in the calculation of his wealth.

Earlier, the ACC started investigation into the alleged illegal wealth of the seven ministers and MPs. They are former health minister AFM Ruhal Haque, MP, former state minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan, former state minister for water resources Mahbubur Rahman MP, lawmaker of Cox's Bazar-4 Abdur Rahman Bodi, MP of Rajshahi-4 Engineer Enamul Haq, MP of Dhaka-14 Aslamul Haque and Abdul Zabbar of Satkhira.

On Wednesday, the ACC also grilled the secretary of the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare for alleged irregularities in allotment of plot during his service in the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
