ACC sues Tarique\\\'s mother-in-law

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Thursday sued Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, mother-in-law of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman for failing to submit her wealth statement.

The ACC approved the case on Tuesday.

Deputy Director of the Commission RK Majumder filed the case with the Ramna Police Station a day after Iqbal Mand Banu appealed before the ACC for giving her a fresh notice for her wealth statement, the anti-graft watchdog officials told reporters.

On Wednesday, Mrs Banu's lawyer Nasir Uddin Ahmed Ashim submitted an application to ACC chairman M Badiuzzman for a fresh notice on Banu's wealth. But ACC commissioner M Shahabuddin said that the commission would file a case against her as per its law. The ACC law provides for three years in jail for ignoring its notice.

Mr Ashim said that his client would comply with the Commission if it sends her a notice again for her wealth statement.

Ms Banu was asked on January 25, 2012 to submit the statement but she secured a stay order from the High Court (HC) later, said an ACC official.

Then the ACC obtained an order from the Supreme Court on September 26 last year halting the HC stay order. The Supreme Court's order removed legal bar on the ACC to obtain Banu's wealth statement. But Banu did not comply till date.
