FE Report | April 10, 2015 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to file two separate cases against the collapsed Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana's parents Abdul Khaleque and Marjina Begum over possessing illegal wealth.

The ACC gave the approval of the case in a regular meeting held at Segun Bagicha on Thursday.

Confirming the matter, ACC deputy-director Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told the FE that ACC investigators would file the case within two or three days.

Earlier on April 5, two separate reports were placed in the ACC.

ACC deputy director Mahbubul Alam, also investigation officer of the case, sought the organisation's approval for filing the case against Rana's parents.

Officials concerned at ACC said the anti-corruption watchdog has evidence of nearly Tk 170 million having been illegally possessed by Rana's parents-Tk 1,024,000,000 by his father and Tk 667,000,000 by his mother.

According to sources, information about the money was not disclosed to the ACC.

On April 24, 2013 Rana Plaza, an eight-story commercial building, collapsed in Savar. More than 1,129 people died and many more were injured.

ACC formed a probe committee on April 28, 2013, four days after the tragedy, to investigate how Rana had amassed his wealth and whether Rana Plaza was constructed by complying with the building code.

His parents were later included in the case.
