ACC to investigate alleged illegal wealth of AL MP, Moudud

FE Report | April 11, 2014 00:00:00

The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) took Thursday a decision to investigate the alleged illegal wealth of Awami League member of parliament (MP) ABM Muzammal Haque.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the commission, the anti-graft watchdog officials told the reporters.

ACC officials said Mr Haque allegedly gained financial benefits by using government assets. He cultivated about 11 ponds in different parts of his constituency by showing his power.

The commission has already sent notices to different agencies seeking information about the alleged corruption.

On April 9, the ACC decided to investigate the alleged illegal wealth of Jatiya Party (JP) secretary general Ruhul Amin Hawlader. The ACC officials said the commission took the decision based on the affidavit submitted to Election Commission (EC) before the 10th Parliamentary Election as it shows that his wealth increased more than the usual way.

Mr Howlader was elected from Patuakhali-1 constituency in the ninth parliament. He retained the seat in the last parliamentary polls.

Earlier, the ACC started investigation into the alleged illegal wealth of seven ministers and members of parliament (MPs). They were former Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque, MP, former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan, former State Minister for Water Resources Mahbubur Rahman, MP, lawmaker of Cox's Bazar-4 Abdur Rahman Bodi, MP of Rajshahi-4 Engineer Enamul Haq, MP of Dhaka-14 Aslamul Haque and Abdul Jabbar of Satkhira.

Media reports on huge discrepancies between wealth statements of the ministers and MPs that they submitted to the EC ahead of the 10th parliamentary elections and the statements they had provided prior to the 9th national polls in 2008 created furore among the people.

Meanwhile, the ACC interrogated Thursday Barrister Ziaur Rahman Khan over allegedly grabbing a government house by BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed.

ACC deputy director Harunur Rashid grilled him from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at the commission headquarters in the city.
