ACC to probe amassing of wealth by Anee, Parwar

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) took a decision Wednesday to begin investigation into the alleged amassing of illegal wealth by former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee and Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Mia Golam Parwar.
The decision was taken at a regular meeting of the commission after approving the preliminary inquiry reports, which were scrutinised by a three-member panel, ACC officials told the reporters.
The officials said the ACC recently received some allegations about amassing of illegal wealth by BNP student affairs secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee and Khulna City Jamaat Ameer Mia Golam Parwar.
The commission is now conducting probe into at least 12 BNP leaders including two vice-chairmen M Morshed Khan and Sadek Hossain Khoka, standing committee member Moudud Ahmed and former state minister of education ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon.
The commission has recently started inquiry against seven ruling party people who were ministers and lawmakers in the tenure of the immediate-past Awami League-led government after the wealth statements they submitted to the Election Commission for contesting the national elections of January 5 had showed an unusual increase in their wealth in the past five years.
They are former health minister AFM Ruhal Haque, former state minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan, former state minister for water resources Mahbubur Rahman, lawmakers of Cox's Bazar-4 Abdur Rahman Badi, Dhaka-14 Aslamul Haque Aslam, Rajshahi-4 (Bagmara) Enamul Haque and Satkhira-2 Abdul Jabbar.
Meanwhile, the ACC on the same day interrogated two bench clerks (peshkars) in connection with the alleged accumulation of illegal wealth by former judge Motahar Hossain who had acquitted BNP's senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman of charges in a money laundering case.
ACC deputy director Harunur Rashid started quizzing peshkars Abul Kalam Azad of Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 and Ariful Islam of Special Judge's Court-3 at 10:00 am and continued it until 2:00 pm at the commission head office in the city, officials said.
Earlier, the ACC had taken statements from lawyer Pabitra Sarkar, assistant general manager of Bashundhara Group, and Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 stenographer M Abu Hasan and Special Judge's Court-3 stenographer M Nurul Islam in this connection.
