BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Sunday that the interim government should be allowed to accomplish its tasks on the basis of a national unity.

He also stressed the need for forging a national unity at the present moment.

"There is no alternative to a national unity right now. If we want to defeat the force that has destroyed the country's economy and political and social fabrics completely, we must keep intake our consensus that we have reached a national unity," he told a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital.

Amar Bangladesh (AB) party organised the event titled 'One month of interim government'.

"Now people could say that Bangladesh is their own country. Now, time has changed. We must recognise the sacrifices of those who had embraced martyrdoms, became victims of enforced disappearances, lost jobs and limbs during students -people movement against Sheikh Hasina," he said.

"What's people are thinking? What's their hope and aspirations? We, who are politicians, must feel their (peoples) sentiment. Those who (politicians) couldn't understand it, couldn't move ahead in the coming days. We want to cooperate with the interim government," he continued.

Mentioning that the people of the country have got back their ownership, the senior BNP leader further said, "Sheikh Hasina and her family members snatched away the country's ownership from the people. And now people are the owner of the country and Bangladesh will run as per their (people) wishes/decision," he continued.

Meanwhile, BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu has called upon India to hand over deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.

"We consider India as our friend. But I don't know the reasons about what the defence minister of that country has said about Bangladesh."

He said BNP leaders and activists are highly alert and keep constant vigil so that none could shift blame on BNP after committing acts like extortion, usurpation and looting.

He said that BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir have directed party men to hand over those involved with committing extortion, usurpation and looting to police.
