Ad-interim bail of Babu stayed

The apex court on Wednesday stayed until November 20 the bail of expelled Jamalpur UP chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu, the prime accused in the journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim murder case.

Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC), passed the order following a petition filed by the state seeking stay on the bail order.

Earlier, the High Court ordered to release Babu on bail. Following the chamber judge's order, Babu's bail was cancelled, said Assistant Attorney General Md Saiful Alam.

A leave-to-appeal petition will be moved before the SC full bench on November 20 against the HC bail order, he added.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state while lawyer Md Momtazuddin Fakir appeared for Babu during the court proceedings.

Nadim, who was the Jamalpur district correspondent of banglanews24.com and also the Bakshiganj correspondent of Ekattor TV, died on June 15, a day after he was allegedly being attacked by Babu's supporters.

Nadim's wife Monira Begum filed the case with Jamalpur's Bakshiganj police station on June 17 against 22 identified and 20-25 unidentified persons.

Babu, the then chairman of Sadhurpara UP in Bakshiganj upazila, was named as the main accused in the case.

Following a bail petition filed by the accused, the HC bench comprising Justice Md Jahangir Hossain and Justice Mohammad Showkat Ali Chowdhury granted for six months' ad-interim bail to Babu.
