Admissibility hearing on war-crime case begins

A court in the city Thursday began admissibility hearing on a civil suit filed against 36 persons for their alleged anti-state activities during the country's liberation war in 1971, reports UNB.
Three lawyers of Dhaka Judge's Court - M Safayat Hossain Sajib, M Liton Mia and Rajeeb Ahmed, who were also plaintiffs of the case-pleaded for opening the war-crime trial.
After hearing both sides, Assistant Judge Iftekhar Ahmed fixed December 1 for the next hearing.
Prof Golam Azam, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujaheed, leaders Delwar Hossain Saidee, M Quamaruzzaman and Abdul Kader Mollah and BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury were among the key defendants in the case.
On November 13, the three lawyers filed the case with the court with a plea for prosecuting the 36 persons as "war criminals".
They also appealed in the court for a ban on the suspects' politics in the country and declaring them ineligible for participating in election.
The legal move came ahead of the general election going to be held in the country next month against the backdrop of political turmoil, clean-up drive and reforms.
