Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) vice-chairman Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed says the Awami League and the BNP should hammer out a political consensus for a free, fair and participatory election.
"A constructive dialogue is a must between the Awami League and the BNP for ensuring a free and fair election," he told a press briefing in his Banani residence on Wednesday.
Mr Hafiz asserted that it would be better if the elections were held under the mediation of the United Nations (UN) and international organisations.
He also said that the political parties should also consider about the alternative of elections time non-party caretaker government.
Responding to a query, the BNP leader said he was contemplating distancing himself from active politics due to his physical conditions, adding that he would go abroad for treatment soon.
Mr Hafiz, however, said he would remain as a supporter of the BNP as he has been with the party over the past 31 years.
Except Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain and Rafiqul Islam Mia, according to the politician, other members of the party's standing committee were his juniors.
The aggrieved BNP leader lamented that his importance in the politics of the nationalist party was no more.
Mr Hafiz highlighted that he was yet to get any reply from his party on a show cause served on him years ago.
The BNP could have participated in the 2014 general election as the government offered the party to join the polls, he observed.
According to Mr Hafiz, the situation is different now as the party (BNP) is yet to get any formal offer (from the government).
