Strongly protesting the arrogant remarks of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders about country's glorious Liberation War, Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) Thursday demanded of the government to take legal steps against them, including outlawing their religion-based politics, reports UNB.
The policymaking body of the former ruling party also sought initiative from the Election Commission to declare the 'war criminals' and religion-based political parties ineligible for taking part in polls and not to register Jamaat as a political party.
The demands came from the resumed meeting of the AL Central Working Committee that adjourned on October 22 at the party's Dhanmondi office. Zillur Rahman, acting president of the party, was in the chair.
The meeting also urged the caretaker government to withdraw the state of emergency and lift the ban on indoor politics across the country.
Talking with reporters after the meeting, Zillur demanded release of their detained party chief, Sheikh Hasina, general secretary Abdul Jalil and other leaders. He reaffirmed party vow to free the ex-PM through legal and constitutional processes.
Terming separation of the judiciary from the executive control a fulfillment of the long-cherished dream of the people for justice, he expressed his optimism that independent judiciary would fulfil people's desire and people would get proper justice.
"It is essential to ensure accountability with the independence of judiciary to get the fruit of the independent judiciary," the AL leader said.
Zillur urged executing the verdict against the killers of Bangabandhu after completing the trial of the grisly murder.
The meeting asked the caretaker administration to take proper initiative to control the price hike of essentials and distribute fertilizer and agricultural tools among the farmers.
Earlier, the working committee meeting on Oct 22 decided to join the EC-sponsored dialogue and formed a subcommittee to review thoroughly the EC's draft proposals for electoral reforms. Presidium Member Tofail Ahmed heads the committee while acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam is its member-secretary.
The subcommittee finalized the draft proposals and placed before the meeting, and the central working Committee approved the proposals unanimously.
AL leaders Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Motia Chowdhury, Syed Ashraful Islam, Mukul Bose, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Abdul Mannan, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Akhtaruzzaman, Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed, Abdur Rahman, Dewan Farid Gazi, Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Abu Sayeed, Asaduzzaman Noor, Raji Uddin Raju, Abdul Mannan Khan, Hasan Mahamud, Dipu Moni and Mannujan Sufian were, among others, present at the meeting.
