Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the Awami League (AL) has suffered a complete political collapse, claiming that the party has been destroyed and eliminated and is now buried in Delhi, reports agencies.
He further said the party would no longer be able to participate in Bangladesh's political process in the future.
The home minister made the remarks while speaking at a discussion of the July National Conference-2026, marking the second anniversary of the July Revolution on Saturday.
The conference was held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center under the joint initiative of the July '24 Martyrs' Families Society and the Central Executive Committee of Amra July Joddha (We Are July Fighters)'.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was the chief guest at the event.
The home minister said that while a UN report mentioned around 14,000 cases, official records published in newspapers and surveys list only about 700 to 800. "Where did the rest go? Hospitals could not preserve the records of the martyrs, and even their documents have disappeared. They were buried as unclaimed bodies. Today, we are unable to return them to their relatives after locating their graves," he said.
He further said that, following what he described as a "brutal killing and genocide," there has been no apology from Sheikh Hasina. "They are labeling the July fighters as criminals and portraying this mass uprising in Bangladesh as militant. Their state power was established through militancy. There is nothing more shameful than this," he added.
The minister also alleged that the Awami League has not acknowledged wrongdoing. "There is no apology within the Awami League. They lack both the willingness and historical precedent to admit guilt. Instead, they are operating from abroad and conspiring against the democratic government in Bangladesh in various ways," he said.
He further claimed that the party has lost political relevance.
