AL leader urges CG not to allow Jamaat to participate in polls for war crimes

Senior Awami League (AL) presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury Monday lent her strong voice to breakaway leader Kader Siddiqui in urging the caretaker government (CG) not to allow Jamaat-e-Islami to participate in elections and bring them to justice for opposing the War of Liberation.
Sajeda Chowdhury said this at the party's Dhanmondi office while launching a probe into the incident of party toughs heckling reformist AL leaders, reports UNB.
"I agree with Krishak Sramik Janata League President Kader Siddiqui on his proposal not to allow Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh to participate in the elections", she said.
Amid a chaos in front of the party's Dhanmondi office on September 12, some central leaders were roughed up because of their stand on party reform in the interim period.
Acting AL General Secretary Mukul Bose, Organising Secretary Abdul Mannan, and AL leaders AKM Jahangir Hossain and Abu Sayeed were abused by the group of party activists before and after the party's Central Working Committee meeting.
Sajeda Chowdhury, the head of a one-member probe committee, attended the Dhanmondi party office from 10:00 am to 12 noon taking deposition from eight witnesses.
She said the AL was now united under the leadership of party chief Sheikh Hasina, now in jail, but it was their duty to maintain the unity of the party.
"There aren't divisions in Awami League. Maybe, there is some difference of opinion among the leaders about some issues, and I think this could be resolved through discussion", Sajeda said.
Responding to a query about her neutrality, the senior leader said she had been associated with AL for a long time so she had obligation to none.
AL leaders Dr Abdur Razzaq and BM Mojammel Huq were also present.
