JESSORE, Jan 23 (UNB): An Awami League (AL) activist was slaughtered in Jhikargachha Upazila of the district last night, report agencies.

The deceased was identified as Humayun Kabir, 40, a local activist of the ruling party and son of Abdul Aziz of Karimali Kundipur village in the upazila.

His cousin Rafiqul Islam Buli, who is the AL General Secretary of Navaran Union, confirmed that Ali was an activist of the local Awami League.

The union AL leader said, "We looked all over for Humayun as he did not return home at night. We identified the body after the locals informed the police about spotting the body. He may have been murdered for reasons other than politics. The dead had marks of wound inflicted by a sharp object."

Police said a gang of miscreants pounced on Humayun in the Panchpota area around 10pm while he was returning home from Battala riding on a bicycle.

The attackers then hacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons and left the spot after slaughtering him, said officer-in-charge (OC) of Jhikargachha Police Station Mamunur Rashid.

Police recovered the body Friday morning and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
