BNP spokesman Asaduzz-aman Ripon alleged on Wednesday   that the ruling party men and law enforcers have been on an extortion spree everywhere ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, reports UNB.

"A horror grand festival of extortion is going on everywhere centring the Eid. Usually, the incidents of extortionist increase ahead of Eid, but this time it has multiplied. The ruling party men are now on an extortion spree everywhere," he said.

Addressing a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office, Ripon further said, "Not only that there're also allegations that the law enforcers are extorting people and harassing them."

The BNP spokesman alleged that the government has failed to check extortion as Awami League cadres and law enforcers are involved in it.

He urged the government to take immediate action in this regard and make the Eid-trippers' journey safe and hassle-free.

Mentioning that the capital city will turn almost vacant during Eid, he called upon the government to take necessary security measures to prevent any untoward incident and ensure the security of public life and property.

Ripon, also international affairs secretary, demanded the government immediately release the BNP leaders and activists so that they can celebrate the Eid with their family members.

"Still, our two standing committee members, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chan-dra Roy, and many other leaders and activists, including Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi have been in jail. "We renewed our demand for the release of the detained opposition men before Eid on humanitarian ground," he said.

Meanwhile, BNP strongly denounced the brutal killing of 13-year-old boy Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon in Sylhet and demanded the government immediately arrest the killers and mete out exemplary punishment to them.

In a statement, the party also urged the government to take lawful actions against officer-in-charge (OC) of Jalalabad thana and others for misbehaving with Rajon's father and helping one of the killers flee abroad.
