The Awami League (AL) has paid rich tributes to the language martyrs by placing wreaths at Azimpur graveyard in the city on the occasion of Shaheed Dibash (Martyrs Day) and the International Mother Language Day, report agencies.

An AL delegation, led by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader, laid wreaths on the graves of the language martyrs there on Wednesday after a 'Provat Feri' (procession) in memory of language heroes.

Besides, AL leaders and workers paid tributes to the language heroes by placing wreaths at Central Shaheed Minar in the city.

After placing the wreath, while speaking to reporters, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud highlighted Bangla's prevalence as one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

He signalled the government's intention to pursue efforts geared towards the adoption of Bangla as an official language of the United Nations.

"There are over 350 million people who speak Bangla across the world. It is probably the 6th or 7th most spoken language in the world. We intend to make Bangla an official language of the UN," he said.
