Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Sunday said they would support any programme by any organization for the release of party chief Sheikh Hasina, reports UNB.
"At this moment, we are not thinking of any movement… I think, we can free our leader through legal process," he said while talking to the reporters at his Gulshan residence.
Responding to a query, Zillur said they have no plan to wage any movement jointly with BNP at this moment.
He demanded immediate release of Sheikh Hasina and withdrawal of the "false cases filed against her."
He alleged that relatives of the AL chief are not allowed to meet her at the special jail in the Parliament Building Complex where she is detained and he requested the administration to allow the relatives to meet with her as per the jail code.
Mentioning arrest and harassment of the leaders and workers of AL and its front organisations, the acting party chief again requested the caretaker government (CG) to stop such arrests and harassment.
On the floating of a new political party by Ferdous Ahmed Koreshi, he wondered how new political parties could be floated when a ban on indoor politics is still in force.
"When we can't organise our presidium meeting and working committee meeting under the state of emergency, how a political party can be launched?" Zillur said. "Two laws can't be applicable at a time in a single country."
He informed that a 102-member legal aid committee has been constituted to extend legal assistance to Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, Zillur congratulated India's newly elected first female president Pratibha Patil and hoped that under her tenure relationship between the two countries would be further strengthened.
