Awami League (AL) joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said Wednesday the expectation of the nation has been fulfilled with the International Crimes Tribunal-1's (ICT's) verdict against Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami, report agencies.
"The verdict has proved that the country's judiciary worked independently. With the verdict, I think, the expectation of the nation has been fulfilled…now the whole nation is delighted," he said.
The AL leader said this in front of the party office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city while giving his reaction to the Nizami's death sentence verdict.
Earlier on the day, the ICT-1 condemned Nizami to death for crimes against humanity, including killing of intellectuals, during the 1971 Liberation War.
In his reaction, Awami League Dhaka city unit general secretary Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya said the trial of the war criminals would not have been possible had Sheikh Hasina not been in power.
Food Minister Quamrul Islam said the Nizami verdict has also proved that there is no entente between the government and the Islamist party.
In reply to a question, the minister said the government would adopt a zero-tolerance policy to save public property if there is any violence over the verdict.
Jamaat-e-Islami's key ally, the BNP, has not given its reaction to Motiur Rahman Nizami's death sentence for war crimes.
The BNP's acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended a discussion in Dhaka in memory of Language Movement veteran Abdul Matin. He was silent when reporters asked him about his party's reaction to the Nizami verdict.
BNP chief Khaleda Zia's advisor Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Joint Secretary General Barkatullah Bulu, too, declined to comment.
Meanwhile, the party had rescheduled its Thursday's Natore rally to Saturday ahead of the verdict.
