All to help in voter list preparation to establish democratic state: Sohul

SYLHET, Sept 6 (UNB): Preparation of voter identity (ID) cards with photographs is a historic step and people of all strata would have to cooperate in implementing such a work to establish a democratic state and a government system.
Election Commissioner Sohul Hussain made the observation while speaking at an opinion exchange meeting at the District Council auditorium here Thursday.
"The present government has initiated work on preparing a flawless voter list with the direct cooperation from the army. We are also taking fingerprints so there will be no fault in making voter list with photograph. Cooperation from all is extremely desirable in this connection", he said.
Sohul said there would be no vote rigging in the elections if a voter list with photographs could be made.
He said names of all adult population of the country would have to be enrolled in the voter list at any cost for the sake of national requirement.
"After taking oath, we've decided to give legal shape to whatever reforms we make."
He said there were many elections held in the past but the voting right of the expatriates was never considered with due importance.
The election commissioner said that the work of voter list would begin in Sylhet City Corporation area from September 24.
Chaired by Sylhet Deputy Commissioner M Harunur Rashid, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Commander of joint forces in Sylhet Mosharraf Hossain and Police Super Ashraf Hossain.
The district administration and the district Election Office organised the opinion exchange meeting.
