Amu slams BNP for joining upazilla polls

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu criticised BNP on Thursday for deciding to join the upcoming upazila parishad elections, following their boycott of the January 5 general

He alleged that BNP-Jamaat had resorted to torching buses, hurling petrol bombs and killing people in the name political movement to restore caretaker government.

"They didn't take part in the 10th parliamentary polls under Sheikh Hasina… now they are taking part in the upazila polls. They have to explain their position," said Amu, also a member of Awami League advisory council, at a book unveiling ceremony at the Liberation War Museum in the city.

He termed BNP's participation in the upazila polls "a new strategy of conspiracy."

The Industries Minister said: "Those who kill people can't be people's friend. I hope people will prove, by exercising their franchise in the upazila parishad elections, that BNP has no room in the country."

He said: "The country's image has brightened under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. Due to the initiatives taken by her, the common people are being able to earn their livelihood."

Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque also spoke at the function, chaired by Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) president Altaf Mahmud.
