Anisul Islam elected JP chief, Ruhul Amin secy gen

Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader have been elected Jatiya Party chairman and secretary general respectively, report agencies.
Mujibul Haque Chunnu was made executive chairman, while Kazi Firoz Rashid was made senior co-chairman of the party.
They were elected at the party's 10th national council in the capital's Gulshan on Saturday.
In his address, Mujibul Haque Chunnu offered an unconditional apology to the nation for what he called past 'moral mistakes' during his nearly four years in the post.

Chunnu said party decisions had sometimes prevented them from taking the right course.
He acknowledged that internal divisions, leadership crises and allegations of nomination trading had 'undoubtedly' tarnished the party's image and dented public trust.
Speaking at the council, Chunnu defended the party's participation in the disputed 2018 and 2024 elections under the then Awami League government, saying it had committed no illegal acts, though it may have erred morally.
The council was held without Chairman GM Quader, who on July 7 had removed Chunnu and nine others from leadership posts. A court later barred Quader from organisational activities, prompting leaders to proceed with the conference.
Accusing Quader of violating the constitution and acting autocratically, Chunnu said the presidium had resolved unanimously to press ahead.
He called the council a 'historic turning point' marking new decisions, responsibilities and aspirations for the party.
