CHITTAGONG, Jan 21: Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury expressed satisfaction at offering transit facilities to India, Nepal and Bhutan and said, it was a long cherished desire of the people of Chittagong.
In a statement he said, Chittagong port being the gateway to South Asia is the key to boosting regional cooperation. Chittagong port is the world's oldest natural maritime port but only 40 per cent of its capacity is being exploited now.
"By giving transit facilities to the neighbouring countries the port will be fully exploited and that will pave way not only for development of Chittagong but will turn the port to a model of multifarious development like Singapore, which will make Chittagong the centre of all activities of the country," he said.
He said that "anti-Chittagong forces" are opposing the transit facilities to the neighbours on baseless and fragile excuses.
