Anwar quits Narayanganj by-poll race

June 09, 2014 00:00:00

Ruling Awami League (AL) leader Anwar Hossain, who joined the Narayanganj-5 by-poll fray in defiance of his party's decision, has pulled out of the race, reports bdnews24.com.

He is the chief of the party's Narayanganj City unit.

When Narayanganj-5 constituency fell vacant at the death of Jatiya Party (JP) MP Nasim Osman, the AL decided not to contest the by-poll.

The JP has nominated Osman's brother Selim Osman.

At a media briefing Sunday in the city, Hossain said he had always followed his party's every decision and never broke a rule.

"I have decided to withdraw my nomination after consulting the party's central leadership," he said reading out a written statement.

Today (Monday) is the last date for withdrawal of nomination.
