Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh Chairman Dr A.Q.M Badruddozza Chowdhury expressed apprehension on Monday that the upcoming city corporations' elections might not be free and fair.
"The upcoming city corporation elections might be a government trap or not. BNP said that the government announced the polls to divert public attention from the ongoing movement.  The government is the source of all power. When they see that there is no possibility to win the polls, then they (government) might postpone the elections by filing a case," he told journalists after visiting the residence of missing BNP's joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed at Gulshan in the city.
He said that there are still a lot of doubts whether the elections will be held or not.
"I think there is still doubt whether the elections will be held. If the elections were held then there will be a doubt about its neutrality and impartiality. Because we have a bitter experience about free and fair elections under the present government," he said.
He said the government made a mistake by holding January 5, 2014 elections. And holding a free and fair city corporation elections will help restore its images about arranging transparent elections.
The election commission (EC) announced April 28, 2015 for polling date for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC). The last date for submission for nomination papers is March 29, 2015.
