CHITTAGONG, Oct 11 (BSS): Detained former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar is expected to be produced before Chittagong court Wednesday next for his suspected links to the country's biggest ever arms haul in Chittagong six years ago.
The metropolitan magistrate Fazlul Bari set October 13 for hearing the remand prayer and ordered Babar to appear before the court in person on the day.
Arrested nearly three years ago under emergency rules during the past military-backed interim government, Babar will be brought to Chittagong from the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
The court issued the order as the investigation officer prayed for 10-day remand to quiz Babar for his suspected involvement in the arms haul.
"Babar was found involved in the incident in further investigations (of the case) and it is evident that he had manipulated the (earlier) investigations," investigating officer Moniruzzaman Chowdhury of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) earlier told the court seeking the remand order.
The court order came two days after former police commissioner of Chittagong Sabbir Ali in a statement told the court that Babar had asked him not to arrest several suspected operators of the National Security Intelligence despite their suspected involvement in the haul.
Ten truckloads of weapons were seized in 2004 as the consignment was believed to be destined to India's separatist United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) hideouts.
"We have found crucial evidence against several high- profile people during the process of extended investigations...............we have also found clues to his (Babar) involvement in the weapon haul," a senior police officer close to the investigations told the news agency.
