Awami League (AL) joint general secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif said Thursday the clashes in city's Bakshibazar area over BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's appearance in court and torching a car of an MP are preplanned, reports BSS.

"Khaleda Zia launched the attacks Wednesday at Bakshibazar and Dhaka Medical College areas with her armed cadres, being sure about her conviction in corruption cases, to stop and hinder the trial proceedings," he said this while addressing a press conference after AL secretarial meeting at Dhanmondi office of party president Sheikh Hasina.

The meeting was held to finalise programmes for the observance of democracy victory day on January 5 and Bangabandhu's home coming day on January 10.

Mr Hanif said the BNP and Chhatra Dal 'terrorist forces' launched the attacks with a view to creating instability in the country.

They want to stop the country's advancement by hindering economic prosperity, he added. The AL leader alleged that BNP gathered 10 to 15 thousand cadres from across the country to launch the attacks.

"If such types of attacks continue, the people might be agitated and launch attacks on your motorcades," he said, adding that the BNP leaders would have to shoulder the responsibilities for the consequences, if such attacks are not stopped.

Referring to the attack on Chhobi Biswas, MP, Hanif said the BNP carried out this terrorist act taking the advantage of democracy. If this continues, the people of this country might attack the cars of the BNP leaders, he said and urged the BNP leaders to stop terrorist activities.

The meeting decided to hold rallies across the country on January 5. In Dhaka, the rally will be held at the Suhrawardi Udyan. The meeting also held discussions on the programmes of January 10 marking Bangabandhu's home coming. AL Joint General Secretary Dr Dipu Moni, Law Affairs Secretary Abdul Matin Khasru, Office Secretary Abdul Mannan Khan, Organising Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Relief and Social Welfare Affairs Secretary Faridunnahar Laily and Deputy Office Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das were present at the press conference.
