Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said on Sunday killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had thought they would be able to destroy Bangladesh and foil its freedom only through killing the great leader, reports BSS.
"They further thought if Bangabandhu's independent Bangladesh can regain its strength to stand on its own feet, it would only be possible through a member of his family. That is why they killed 17 members of his family. The history has proved the fact that it took his able daughter Sheikh Hasina to take the helm in her hands to do many things including making the development. So the design of the killers was not unfounded," he said.
The minister came up with the observation while addressing a discussion organised by his ministry marking 44th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the National Mourning Day in the capital.
Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division Senior Secretary Mohammad Shahidul Haque, Inspector General of Directorate of Registration Khan Md Abdul Mannan and Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar were present on the occasion, among others.
Recalling the political struggle of the Father of the Nation, the law minister said he had chosen the path of systematic struggle and the path of self-suffering.
"He (Bangabandhu) never tried to do anything for himself. Whatever he did he did for the people of Bangladesh and that is his greatness," Anisul further said.
The law minister further said Bangabandhu taught us to think about getting free, adding, "He gave us independence; he gave us the country, its flag and its constitution. He formulated all the acts needed for a newly born country to get up on its feet."
A doa mahfil was also organised on the occasion.
