July 06, 2007 00:00:00

Foreign Affairs Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury said, the Bangladesh Government combines in its policies the facilitation of economic growth with a wider casting of the social safety net to assist the vulnerable groups in the society, reports UNB.
This he described as "walking on two legs, one symbolising free market, the other social consciousness."
Speaking at a panel discussion in Geneva Wednesday afternoon on the sideline of the ECOSOC High Level Ministerial Segment Con ference, the Adviser also said, Bangladesh's experiences show that development is best achieved when a country is in control of its own destiny. "Also, if policies followed are home-grown," he added.
