Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Monday that the country could not gain BRICS membership due to the diplomatic failure of the government.
"The government has not only failed economically but also diplomatically. The Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina) went to South Africa boasting that the country could be a member of BRICS. But our most friendly country (India) that took the major decision on the membership expansion of BRICS rejected our entry," standing committee member of BNP Dr Abdul Moin Khan said at a discussion organised by Jatiyatabadi Projonmo '71 marking its 18th founding anniversary at the National Press Club.
The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit in Johannesburg, South Africa recently gave six new countries membership, but Bangladesh was not included as new member. At least 20 countries including Bangladesh applied for membership of BRICS.
