Bangladesh for senior UN peacekeeping posts

NEW YORK, Oct 4 (UNB): Bangladesh made a strong plea for senior positions in peacekeeping both at the headquarters and field level.
Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury made the request during a meeting with Head of United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Under-Secretary-General Jean-Marie Guehenno Wednesday evening.
The adviser said that Bangladesh had consistently remained among the top troop-contributors, and naturally expected posts commensurate with her contribution.
Guehenno assured him that this would be borne in mind when future placements would be made.
He also thanked the foreign adviser warmly for the role that Bangladesh was playing to this effect and praised the performance of Bangladesh troops in the field.
They also discussed possible future deployments in Darfur.
The adviser was told that it was possible that Sudan would withdraw her objections to non-African infantry presence in the region, in which case, the UN would be in a better position to take up the offers from Asian countries of which Bangladesh was a prominent one.
Speaking to the media later Chowdhury said, "I told Guehenno that the Bangladeshi public enthusiastically supported this noble role of our troops and we would be quite happy to expand our number, if called upon to do so. I also invited Guehenno to visit Bangladesh again and see for himself our capabilities."
