NEW YORK, Oct 11 (UNB): Bangladesh has called for greater cooperation of the world community in strengthening the peace and security of the world through disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ismat Jahan made the call while speaking at a general debate of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assemb-ly (UNGA) Wednesday.
Reaffirming Bangladesh's commitment for complete disarmament and non-proliferation, Ismat Jahan highlighted Bangladesh's leading role in signing and ratifying all major international disarmament treaties.
She also urged the world community to extend their cooperation in enforcing the existing treaties.
Expressing concern at the nuclearisation of South Asia, she stressed the necessity for building a nuclear free zone in the region as well as in the Middle East.
She also called upon India, Pakistan and Israel to relinquish nuclear weapons and join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Ismat Jahan urged the member states to reduce their expenditure on military buildup and divert investments on social sector for speedy achievement of Millennium Development Goals.
