Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said on Monday that imposing ban on a political party to consolidate power absolutely will not bring any positive result.

He made the comment while addressing a discussion marking the historic 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day' on 7th November, organised by Swadinata Forum (Independence Forum) at the National Press Club in the capital.

"People of all walks of life liberated the country, and Awami League (AL) alone formed government after the country's independence. They (AL) wrote the Constitution in 1972. Did they (AL) follow that Constitution?" he said.

"Were robberies, stealing, snatching and repression on women written in the 1972 Constitution? They (AL) have violated the Constitution written in 1972 and established one party BAKSAL rule in the country. There is no political party other than Awami League that has violated the Constitution grossly," he said.

"Sheikh Hasina didn't obey law (while in power). Now she fears the law. If not then she did not flee the country," he continued.

Showing his respect to the participants of the July-August (2024) uprising against the autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina, he said that the people of the country would be happy if persons having experience would get the opportunity to serve the nation.

"The people of the country as well as BNP want national election. An impulsive decision doesn't bring any good result," he said.

"Ziaur Rahman (former president and founder of BNP) allowed the parties that were banned (by BAKSAL government)to do politics. Awami League also got opportunity that time for doing politics," he maintained.

He termed Ziaur Rahman as the second leader of Awami League while Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bashahni was the first leader.

About banning a political party, he said that any move to impose ban on a political party doesn't yield any good result.

President of Swadinata Forum (Independence Forum) Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah presided over the event also attended by BNP chairperson's adviser Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon.

Meanwhile, in another programme standing committee member of BNP Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Monday that the past Awami League government had tried to erase the history of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

He said that the previous AL government had erased the history of National Revolution and Solidarity Day from textbook but couldn't remove it from the people's minds because they love former president late Ziaur Rahman, BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

He made the comments at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital after a joint meeting with the leaders of Dhaka city BNP and its associate bodies.

He said that sepoy-janata (soldiers and people) jointly rescued Ziaur Rahman from the captivity during Sepoy - Janata movement on November 7, 1975.

He said that people gave responsibility to Ziaur Rahman to govern the country.
