BCL activists attack BNP leader's house

BARISAL, Mar 29 (UNB): A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League activists attacked the house of upazila BNP convener under Swarupkati Upazila town in Pirojpur district Saturday.
Witnesses said a group of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists with a motorcycle rally, led by Pirojpur district JCD Secretary Sheikh Riazuddin Rana, came to the upazila to visit BNP Leader Matiur Rahman Shikdar at about 10.00pm Saturday.
On the way, the BCL and Jubo League cadres chased and hurled brick bats at the JCD activists. At one stage the JCD activists took shelter inside the house of Matiur Rahman Shikdar to escape from the attackers. Then the BCL cadres attacked the house of the BNP leader. Later, police brought the situation under control.
AL and its front organisations Sunday brought out agitation procession in the upazila town and held three separate gatherings at upazila parishad complex, Shahid Minar and upazila health complex ground against Matiur Shikdar.
The rallies were addressed, among others, by Delwar Hossain Faruk, Former Swarupkati municipal mayor and AL convener, Abdus Salam
Shikdar, upazila AL organising secretary, Kazi Shakhawat Hossain and Kazi Saifuddin Taimur.
In the gatherings the ruling party leaders declared Matiur Shikdar persona non grata in the upazila as a war criminal and demanded his trial and punishment.
Matiur Shikdar, however, was not available for comment.
