Awami League (AL) associate organisations Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League locked into loggerheads over submitting tender for a construction work of Tk 240 million at Dhaka University (DU) Monday.

The university authorities recently published a notice in several newspapers asking to submit tenders for constructing a 13-storey residential building for young teachers of DU at Nimtali gate near Chankharpool.

The deadline of submitting tender was scheduled for Monday. Sources said former and incumbent leaders of BCL and Jubo League launched a frantic lobbying with different circles to get the aforesaid construction work.

Three BCL groups led by Wadud Khokon, Mainuddin Babu and Shafique got united to take the work for Hasan Constructions reportedly owned by AFM Bahauddin Bahar MP.

But a few Jubo League leaders denied agreeing with the decision of BCL groups and submitted a tender in the name of Toma Construction. The situation got tense Monday noon as both the groups threatened each other to withdraw their tenders.

A large number of law enforcers of different agencies were deployed in front of the DU Registrar's building to ward off any untoward incident.

The authorities instantly declared Toma Construction the bid winner to avoid further complications. But the pro-BCL leaders alleged that Toma Construction was given the work, as DU Treasurer Mizanur Rahman is the Vice-President of Jubo League.

When asked, DU treasurer denied the allegation brought against him claiming the tender procedure was very open and transparent.

Sources said three construction companies- Toma construction Limited, Civil Engineering Construction Company Limited and PBLMBA Limited dropped tenders for the work.

Civil Engineering Construction Company official Nurul Amin alleged that the BCL leaders forced him to withdraw the tender of his company.
