BCL men block road in Gazipur over leader\\\'s arrest

GAZIPUR, Sept 2 (UNB): The activists of local Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) staged demonstrations by blocking a road here in the town Tuesday demanding the release of one of their leaders.

Witnesses said a group of BCL men brought out a procession from Azim Uddin College in the town demanding the release of Masud Rana Ershad, president of city unit BCL, in the morning.

Later, they blocked Rajbari road in front of the deputy commissioner's office to press home their demand, disrupting traffic for half an hour.

Police arrested two people, including Masud Rana Ershad, from Mouchak area in Kalikoir upazila on Monday following a clash.

At least 10 people were injured in the clash between two BCL factions over controlling jhut business at Niloy Motors Factory of Nitol-Tata Group in Mouchak on Monday.

Several motorbikes were also vandalised during the clash when the BCL activists traded gunfire.

Our Ctg Correspondent adds: Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has filed a case against 17 railway employees and police in connection with the incident of August 27 at the railway station.

The case was filed today with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Matiur Rahman by BCL leader Ashraf Uddin Titu. The CMM instructed the officer in charge (OC) of Kotwali police to record the case and submit the investigation report.

Those accused in the case are railway station master Abu Jafar Ahmed, OC of GRP police station Yasin Faruk, OC's bodyguard Emran, GRP sub-inspector Wahid, booking clerk Mohammed, Railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB) members Russel, Saiful Islam, Shamsuddin, Imran Khan, Quddus, Mohammed Ullah, Habildar Rabiul, Munir Hossain, Habibur Rahman Habib and Sabbir.

BCL leaders submitted an application to the railway station master of Chittagong on August 20 for 380 tickets to attend the students rally on August 31 last.

As a few BCL leaders went to the station on August 27 to collect railway tickets the station master said there were no tickets for them. At one stage of altercation the station master, booking clerks and railway security members beat them up severely.

On information a number BCL leaders and workers arrived at the station and resorted to vandalism. A team of police personnel from Kotwali brought the situation under control.

Later the station master, Abu Jafar Ahmed was suspended and officer-in-charge of the railway police station Yasin Faruk was sent on forced leave.
