CHATTOGRAM, Apr 07: A total of seven persons, including a policeman, were injured as Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists clashed with police on the Chattogram University (CU) campus at noon.
Agitated, BCL activists also ransacked vehicles of police and teachers during the melee.
Of the injured, police constable Farid of Hathazari thana and BCL activists Sadi Murshed, Muklesur Rahman and Mohammad Ramzan Ali were admitted to the CU Medical Centre.
Identity of the rest three injured were yet to be ascertained while filling this report at 4pm.
Police and students said of the unidentified three injured, two were passers-by while another was a BCL activist.
According to sources, two factions of BCL's CU unit had locked in clashes for the last three consecutive days, where nobody was injured but police arrested six activists of the student front of the ruling Awami League over the incidents.
A faction of the BCL enforced blockade on the campus demanding immediate release of those arrested. They faced an attack from their rival group at 11.30 am.
As police being informed rushed to the spot around 12 pm, both the feuding BCL groups swooped on the law enforcers.
In retaliation, police also opened rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells, leaving the seven persons injured.
Officer-in-Charge of Hathazari thana Md Belal Uddin said, "A police constable was injured in an attack by agitated students. The situation is now under control."
Acting Registrar KM Nur Ahmed said examinations and classes were suspended as a student organisation called blockade on the campus.
He added the shuttle trains could not reach the campus due to the blockade and the university buses also could not move for the same reason.
