Two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Monday night staged a showdown trying to establish respective supremacy on Dhaka University (DU) campus as two gunshots broke the late-night silence, reports UNB.
Chhatra League General Secretary Mahfujul Haider Roton came under abuses hurled by a Zia Hall unit leader at a stage of quarrelling "over the sharing of tender-negotiation money", BCL sources said.
Two gunshots were fired in Nilkhet residential area of the campus during the incident, campus sources said.
When contacted, DU Proctor Saiful Islam Khan said, "We heard the sound of gunshots last night, but we don't know who had fired."
He also said that they were looking into the incident to keep peaceful and congenial academic atmosphere on the campus.
The BCL General Secretary, Roton, termed the incident unfortunate and said, "The party would take action against those involved in tender manipulation."
Allegations have it that tender-negotiation money got from a construction firm was disbursed earlier in the night among leaders of different hall units of the student organisation associated with the ruling party.
